ANNENBERG PHYSICIAN TRAINING PROGRAM: ADDICTION TREATMENT for the FUTURE

Posted:    October 31, 2008
DEADLINE:  NONE POSTED

The Annenberg Physician Training Program in Addictions is a four week experiential program in which you have the opportunity to be "admitted" to a substance use disorder treatment program.  Applications are being accepted now for the 2009 program year.

It has long been recognized that there is an insufficient supply of physicians trained in the field of addictive disease to meet the needs of the patient population.  A variety of certification programs have been formed, but they often go unfilled.  Three years ago, the Annenberg Foundation funded our program to discover methods that could be used to develop greater interest in, addictive disease among physicians.

Our first approach is an experiential one in which medical students are exposed to the "epidemic" through participation in a treatment facility's patient milieu.  Surveys of students are used as part of the research plan.  The first summer program was set as a pilot project for 2006; the following year was our fully operational year.  As a participant in 2009, you'll be part of the patient milieu, eating with patients, participating in groups with patients, and so forth.  You won't be emulating a physician, but rather a patient so as to learn through the eyes of the patient.  That being said, you will have a mentor who will be available to answer any questions that might arise or work through any issues that take place.

Where and when you participate is dependent upon your availability.  Our program sites include locations in Bettendorf IA, Pueblo CO, Grand Rapids MI, and Gainesville FL.  Most students participate in the summer, but the 2009 program year starts in January.  We reimburse all travel expenses for each participant.

Some schools will give elective credit; alternatively, we grant a stipend of $1,000 for four weeks of participation.  We cover your room and board by directly reimbursing the participating facility for your stay.  Don't forget that this a 24/7 program.  You don't have weekends or evenings "off" any more than the patients do at the program where you'll participate.  It's a challenge and if you're interested, we'll share feedback from past participants and send you an application.

Go to www.annenbergtraining.com for an application.  Questions by e-mail drgitlow@aol.com or 212-731-0755.

UNIVERSITY of CINCINNATI SHOULDER to SHOULDER PROGRAM

Posting Date:  December 28, 2004
DEADLINE: First Come. First Served

Below you will find a brief accounting of Rebecca Hoban’s (MSII) experience this past summer.  She and a classmate both took advantage of the opportunity offered at the University of Cincinnati to participate in the Shoulder to Shoulder Program in Honduras this past summer.  For more information about the program, go to http://www.shouldertoshoulder.org.

The Shoulder to Shoulder/Hombro a Hombro Program is mainly run through the University of Cincinnati with help from the government of Honduras and American charities. The clinic is located in Santa Lucia, Honduras, a small town near the El Salvador border that was just joined to the main town three hours away by the "highway" (a rough rocky dirt road) a few years ago - before that, it was only accessible by horseback. So it's pretty remote. We were occasionally without water and power but that made it just that much more authentic. :) You live in a dorm above the clinic and there's a woman who cooks for you and the doctors. We were the only medical providers within a few hours walk (people would WALK 4 hours to see us), so the clinic saw it all - emergencies from machete wounds and anaphylactic shock from 50 wasp stings  and a GSW to childbirth to chicken pox to your basic ear infections and abscesses and colds.

There are one to two doctors on staff and a nurse, and you (and any other med students who are rotating through, but a maximum of three a month.)  The clinic is always swamped so you get HANDS ON ANYTHING! Within in 20 MINUTES of being there, I helped deliver a baby!!! Its intense, but amazing. The doctors are there to help teach you - they're awesome, but they will let you do ANYTHING you feel comfortable with. I was seeing patients with a fourth year student on my own by the second week. I learned how to do physical exams, how to do injections and blood work, childbirth and neonatal care, how to put in stitches, a lot of Pharmacology, doing house calls, etc.   You need to know some Spanish to go - no one there speaks any English except for the doctors, but your Spanish will improve so fast!! My medical Spanish was pretty poor at first, but the patients are so thankful to be getting care, and they are patient and will help you along as you look in your dictionary and hand signals work wonders!

I was there for a month and learned so much! Plus, the program is very very very cheap! It's only $100 a week for room and board, and you can get a scholarship from the IUPUI grad student organization for $500 which will pay for a month there plus some of your travel expenses to get there! I traveled afterward in Honduras, Belize, and Guatamala. This was the most amazing experience of my life. I was changed forever - to see the conditions the people there live in and to see how the doctors there practice medicine without most of the modern diagnostic conveniences we take for granted is amazing. You should not pass this up!! My roommate and I went together and would go again in a second. The website for the organization is http://www.shouldertoshoulder.org.  They request that you apply at least about 4 months before you want to go I think, and they only take about 3 students a month. I went from May to June.... I hope you will consider this program! They need the help in Honduras and you will get even more out of it then them - I learned more in a month there then I've learned in med school so far...

DIABETES CAMP: EXCITING OPPORTUNITY for Medical Students Finishing their 1st Year

Posting Date:  December 1, 2008

DEADLINE:     Appreciate hearing from students no later than May 1, 2009 to accommodate all requests

Are you looking for an important and challenging experience this summer; one that will help during medical school and beyond?  Many medical students and physicians find that they are uncomfortable with the daily management of diabetes mellitus, particularly insulin dose adjustments and interpretations of blood glucose levels.  This discomfort can create apprehension during medical school, as well as during internship and residency.  Some residents finish their training and never gain the experience required for proper and up-to-date management of diabetes.  In these days, when tight glucose management is mandatory, and diabetes management is increasingly complex, greater experience with diabetes is very helpful to prevent children and adults from developing long-term diabetic complications.

We are offering an outpatient volunteer experience this summer in Pediatric Diabetes during June 2009.  This time involves a week spent working with the team of physicians, nurses, dietitians, and support staff from Riley Hospital as a volunteer at the American Diabetes Association-sponsored diabetes summer camp in northern Indiana.  The week of diabetes camp is June 6th through the 13th.   Each medical staff person takes care of 8-10 children, in concert with physicians, nurses, nursing students, physician assistant students, dietary students, and pharmacy students.

You will learn how to manage mild, moderate, and severe hypoglycemia and will gain tremendous experience by adjusting insulin doses on a daily basis under the supervision of an experienced staff doctor.  During training, you will learn how to inject insulin shots and operate a variety of insulin pumps.  Once you have a group of “campers,” you will be required to administer insulin doses two to six times daily.   Eventually, students at camp gain a large amount of autonomy and are able to provide excellent diabetes care.

The camp experience will include dietary instruction and provide you with the opportunity to use several of the newest glucose meters, pens, and insulin pumps on the market.  During the daytime, you will be able to participate with the campers in group activities.  There is no charge for the experience.  Housing and meals are provided during your time at camp. You will sleep in cabins (which are now air-conditioned!) on the campgrounds and eat in the dining hall.

Each year the medical students who have attended camp have had a great experience and have been invaluable members of the medical staff.  Each student who completes the experience will receive a letter for their Dean's office file from the camp Medical Director for their participation (as well as the reward of caring for children).

This is a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in providing medical care regardless of which field of medicine you eventually choose.

If you are interested in participating or have additional questions, please contact Todd Nebesio, M.D., at 274-3889 or at tdnebesi@iupui.edu.

Posting Date:    December 4, 2008
DEADLINE:    February 1, 2009

This program offers first-year medical students an opportunity to spend their free summer in one of the community hospitals within Indiana learning about clinical medicine and community health.  In the process, some students are paid a stipend by the hospital and in some instances room and board is provided.  Individual programs typically run eight weeks with students spending at least 40 hours per week in the hospital and/or clinics.  Students participating in the program may hold other jobs over the summer, but must first meet priority obligations to the participating hospital.

Here is the information on the HME Program.  Attached you will find the HME Application, the Cover Memo about the program, the suggested program outline and timetable for the program.  Finally, attached is the list of Hospital participants on an EXCEL spreadsheet and the details of each Hospital's participation in the program.  Be aware that the spreadsheet is a continuous sheet and you will need to print it off and tape it together side-to-side so that the information is lined up for each hospital.

INTERHEALTH SOUTH AMERICA SUMMER PROGRAM IN ECUADOR

First year medical students may wish to consider joining us next summer for our Interhealth South America global health experience in we have organized the past several years. The program has developed over time, and now includes several components:

* Clinic and community health work on both individual and group levels
* Seminar introduction to healthcare provision in South America
* Observation of primary and community healthcare institutions
* More emphasis now being placed on participation in traditional/indigenous rural health activities
* Tours of Andes Mountain and upper Amazon River basin rainforest sites demonstrating a variety of natural environments
* Formal medical Spanish language instruction.
* Interactive introduction to medical interviewing and physical examination in Spanish
* Family home stay for a portion of the time

Dates for the program are June 28 – July 25, 2009.

The program is most appropriate for those who may prefer working in an international setting on a more group oriented rather than individual basis. Opportunities are available for both beginning Spanish speakers as well as those who have experience with the language.

We remain in the entire time to serve in a facilitating role for students, as they work with colleagues in Ecuadorian institutions.

We would appreciate if those potentially interested are provided with information about the program. Please also feel welcome to be in communication with us at any time if you may wish further details about the work we do in with students. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,Don Wedemeyer M.D.

SNMA David E. Satcher, M.D. Research Fellowship Announcement
Sponsored by: Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative

DESCRIPTION

Created in conjunction with the Student National Medical Association’s 2005 Obesity Walkathon: Saving Our Communities One Step at a Time!, the SNMA David E. Satcher, M.D. Research Fellowship aims to provide members of the SNMA with opportunities to explore racial and ethnic health disparities through a research environment.

In March of 2005, the SNMA met challenge of the 2001 Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity. The former Surgeon General David E. Satcher M.D. retained his commitment to tackling obesity by serving as the 2005 Obesity Walkathon national spokesman, and in honor of his support and dedication to communities of color, the research fellowship carries his name. The SNMA aims to provide training and research opportunities for its members, while spreading its message regarding the urgent need of obesity research in the minority communities. Currently African-Americans are the leading demographic of affected patients in thirteen of the top fifteen deadly diseases directly related to obesity, with Latinos being a close second.

Through Pfizer’s Medical Humanities Initiative, SNMA David E. Satcher, M.D. Research Fellowships are awarded to select SNMA members after a rigorous application process. Fellowship awards begin at $5000 for research focusing on racial and ethnic health disparities, which includes but is not limited to, research in obesity prevention and obesity intervention. The research may be within the basic sciences, clinical sciences, or public health.

T35 SHORT-TERM TRAINING PROGRAM in WOMEN'S HEALTH and AGING

Posted:    November 1, 2008
DEADLINE:    February 1, 2009

IUSM Summer Research Common Application

PI: Rose S. Fife, M.D.

This program will provide short-term (i.e., 3-month blocks) training for predoctoral (M.D., Ph.D., D.N.S., D.D.S.) students in areas of research related to the health of elderly women.  The specific areas of expertise of our mentors are relevant to the health of older women and include the following: endocrinology (osteoporosis, diabetes), cancer, health services-related research, pharmacogenetics/pharmacogenomics, neurology and psychiatry (cognitive dysfunction, depression), and clinical trials.   Many of our faculty also are particularly interested in research that examines factors involved in health disparities, including breast cancer screening, increased severity of diseases such as diabetes, and the advanced state of cancers at presentation in minority women.

Trainees will participate in a series of lectures, including those in areas relevant to the responsible conduct of research.  They will receive the benefits of a Mentoring Panel to help them begin to chart their careers and strategies and to provide them with resources and contacts with which to connect in the future for career guidance and advice.  We hope to make this program a stepping-stone to careers in academic medicine, targeting women’s health, and to facilitate subsequent research training by connecting these trainees with more extensive training programs at our institution and at others around the country.  An External Advisory Board will evaluate our progress at regular intervals.
