The Department of Anesthesia offers senior
electives that cover most of the relevant subspecialty areas. One month
rotations are available in adult, pediatric and obstetrical anesthesia,
pain management, and surgical critical care medicine. During elective
rotations, the student has the opportunity to attend Core Curriculum
lectures, Journal Clubs, and Mortality-Morbidity Conferences. Specific
areas to which the student may expect to be exposed include:
- Preoperative
evaluation and preparation of surgical
patients
- Airway
management
- Management of
patients receiving mechanical ventilation
- Interpretation
of blood gases
- Use an
interpretation of data from invasive monitoring devices, including
systemic and pulmonary artery catheters
- Techniques of
pain management

Students who anticipate taking post-graduate training in Anesthesiology
are advised to schedule Anesthesiology rotations in the first six months
of the academic year.
