DERMATOLOGY
Guidelines for Elective Programs and Residency Training

[ ELECTIVE LIST ]

Dermatology is an important component in the practice of internal medicine, pediatrics, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, and family medicine, as well as being a specialty in its own right. An elective in dermatology will be helpful in acquiring skills in the diagnosis and management of skin diseases. Electives are available on the campus and in a number of private settings.

Members of the department will be available to counsel students who are interested in dermatology residency training. Eligibility for the Board requires four years of post-graduate clinical training beyond medical school. The first year, PGY-1, may either in a transitional program or integrated into a four year dermatology program. In either situation, the PGY-2-4 years are part of an approved dermatology program.

The class of 2008 will seek first year postgraduate training programs which begin in July 2008. As of this publication, we are combining the PGY-1 year into an overall four-year dermatology program. The first year, PGY-1 will be in conjunction with the Department of Medicine in what was formerly known as the preliminary medicine year. Therefore, the traditional internship experience will be in conjunction with our medicine interns. The appointments for the year 2008 residency positions in dermatology will be made through the NRMP
