ORTHOPAEDICS
Guidelines for Elective Programs and Residency Training

ELECTIVE LISTING

Any of the full time faculty members of the Orthopaedic Department are qualified and willing to act as a faculty advisor. If the student has not had contact with any of the departmental members and has no preference one way or another, then a faculty representative can be assigned to the student through the Chairman's office.

The student probably should take an elective on orthopaedics here and/or at other institutions of interest to the student in order to confirm the interest in this subject and to allow the Orthopaedic Department to become better acquainted with the student. In order to serve these functions, the orthopaedic elective should be scheduled for the early part of the senior year.

Research experience is valued by many orthopaedic residency programs and may assist the student in decisions regarding career plans.

The process of obtaining graduate education in orthopaedics is best facilitated by discussions with department faculty since career goals play a part in the type of training and location of training program. The Orthopaedic Department now matches five senior students into a PG-1 year with the anticipation that all five individuals will enter the residency program the following year. Interviews are required and are generally scheduled in early December of the senior year. Arrangements are through the Orthopaedic Department.  A number of residency programs use this same format.
