MEDICAL EDUCATION ELECTIVE IN PATHOLOGY

Course Director:
Dr. Tom Davis

Other Faculty:
Dr. George Sandusky

NOTE: THIS COURSE MAY BE ADDED/DROPPED WITH 7 DAYS NOTIFICATION.

Description:

Students may satisfy the requirements for the pathology education elective in several ways:

1) Students may serve as teaching assistants in General Pathology C603 in the Fall or Systemic Pathology C604 in the Spring. This requires preparing for and attending all lab sessions during the month as well as editing lab manuals and creating new teaching materials. This may include gross and microscopic photography.  Students may be asked to help with administration of written and practical examinations.

2) Students may complete an "electronic project" and create study materials to be used in the courses (quizzes, PowerPoints etc.). The project is created on Angel and posted on Angel as well. It may also be submitted for Level 3 Competency in LifeLong Learning. For example, creation of a Quiz (with images) of 25 questions or a PowerPoint presentation of 40-50 slides would satisfy this option.

3) Students may participate in a combination of the first 2 activities to be arranged with the faculty.  Students are expected to be working on the elective from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Monday-Thursday. Lab sessions with the 2nd-year students meet from 1:00-3:00 PM on M-Th. Preparation for the next week's labs are made on Friday mornings.

NOTE: THIS COURSE REQUIRES 2 MONTHS NOTICE BEFORE START DATE TO DROP OR ADD.

Description:

This elective will expose the student to pathology as practiced in a community hospital setting.  The student will have brief exposure to all areas of the labs as well as anatomic pathology. Students will experience surgical pathology, cytopathology (including fine needle aspirates) and clinical pathology (hematopathology, transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry and microbiology).

Goals:

The student will become familiar with all aspects of a pathology practice except autopsies (not performed at Wishard Hospital). This is a survey elective. It does NOT offer a level 3 competency.

AUTOPSY PATHOLOGY/INDIANAPOLIS

Course Director:
Dr. Dean A. Hawley

Description/Objectives

1.    The student will function on the IU/Clarian Health Indianapolis autopsy service as an extern under the supervision of a pathology resident and direct supervision of pathology faculty. Students will perform dissections and external and internal examination on autopsies performed for the medical school and affiliated hospitals.

2.    Students with interest in specialized surgical, neurological, or radiographic anatomy will learn to correlate surgical and radiographic perspectives with three-dimensional anatomy. There is special focus on neuropathology and neuroanatomy, with specific correlation to neuroradiologic procedures.

3.    Students will learn to correlate clinical laboratory procedures such as microbiological culture and clinical toxicology with the clinical presentations of disease.

4.    Students will learn to correlate the histologic and histochemical basis of cellular pathology to the human pathologic process in the areas of cancer and transplantation immunology.

5.    Students will review, through didactic teaching materials, the fundamentals of forensic pathology as those principles apply to wound interpretation. Depending on the case load and availability, students may be able to participate in legal depositions, courtroom testimony, and forensic crime lab consultation as those activities relate to the duties of the physician within the criminal justice system.

Description:

The Pathology Elective is designed to acquaint the student with the practice of pathology. The student will spend the first two weeks doing general anatomic pathology which includes autopsy and surgical pathology. He/she will participate in the performance of autopsies, gross specimen dissection, frozen sections, and microscopic examination with both the resident and staff pathologists. Students are encouraged to participate in the dictation of gross findings. The second part of the month will be spent rotating on the cytology and hematology services. During this time the student will examine gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens and observe the performance and interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies. On the hematology service they will study peripheral smears and observe the retrieval and microscopic examination of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy specimens. The student may arrange to observe other areas of the pathology laboratory such as the blood bank which has a busy plasmapheresis service.

Throughout the month the student is encouraged to attend and, when appropriate, participate in the daily departmental and the interdepartmental conferences.

The student is not required to take night or weekend call on this elective.

PATHOLOGY - EMPHASIS IN HEMATOPATHOLOGY

Course Director:
Dr. Roepke

Other Faculty:

Description:

Students will be taught the clinical abnormalities and most of the laboratory techniques for diagnosing the common hematological disorders, including myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disorders, leukemias, and lymphomas. This will be done by accompanying residents and staff on bone marrow procedures and by studying blood, bone marrow, and lymph node slides under the supervision of the attending staff and residents. The current workload includes 200 bone marrows and 40,000 CBC's annually. Flow cytometry testing, lymph node, fine needle aspirate, bone marrow, and peripheral blood specimens are also readily available.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the elective, the learner will be able to describe the classification system of myelodysplastic syndromes, anemias, myeloproliferative disorders, leukemias, and lymphomas, as well as criteria for making such diagnoses. The learner may also generate reports similar to pathology residents, present a topic of interest related to hematopathology,  or submit a case study for publication if interested in level III competency.
