Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is a broad specialty encompassing medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the head and neck. Practitioners of this specialty are in great demand across the United States.
Students who are interested in a career in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery should meet with one of the faculty advisors in our department to assist them in their future planning. Dr. Richard T. Miyamoto, Dr. Edward E. Weisberger, as well as Dr. Michael Fritsch, Dr. Bruce Matt, Dr. Susan Cordes, and Dr. Mimi Kokoska have made themselves available to serve in this capacity. In addition, members of our resident staff are also excellent sources of information regarding the specialty and also regarding residency programs in general.
The following senior electives would be valuable for a student interested in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery: medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, otolaryngology, neurology, radiology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, neurologic surgery, thoracic surgery, and anesthesia.
Our residency program participates in the Otolaryngology Match. Interested students should submit an application early in their senior year. Letters of recommendation should come from members of the faculty who have had the most contact with the applicant.
The American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery requires five years of graduate training after graduation from medical school. The Indiana University program consists of one year of general surgery, followed by four years of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.
