Kristin Buzzitta, Class of 2012, is working on her project in Dr. Michael Sturek's lab.
The Student Research Program in Academic Medicine (SRPinAM) began in 1983 to provide research opportunities for medical students in hopes of furthering the medical student's aspirations to become a physician scientist. More then 30 students annually performing research in basic science, clinical and translational sciences have taken advantage of the program since 1984.
In 1987, the program hit a milestone and was able to secure an NIH training grant that ran through 2005. Since then the program has only been able to provide up to 30 student research opportunities with IUSM faculty researchers. Under the leadership of Dr. Nadia Carlesso, IUSM re-applied for an NIH training grant to once again help support the program. Since 2005, support for the program has come through a variety of avenues, but the majority of the funding has come from the IUSM Dean's Office and the Center for Translational Science Instittue (CTSI).
Thirty-two medical students were selected to participate in the Student Research Program in Academic Medicine in the spring of 2011. The students will spent 10 weeks during the 2012 summer with the guidance of an IUSM research mentor doing their own research projects as well as attended weekly seminars to learn more about the process of considering research as a future endeavor. You can view the 2011 participants and their research mentor assignement under Participants/Projects.
Medical students are encouraged to consider participating in this program as a launching pad for other research opportunities in their medical education as they develop into physician scientists.
"Clinical translation of scientific discoveries needs the coordinated action of scientists and clinicians. Bridging the worlds of the research lab and the clinic is made possible through the work of physician-scientists."
MISSION
To contribute to the number of physician-scientists by encouraging and fostering a generation of medical students interested in biomedical research.OBJECTIVE
To create opportunities for medical students to experience hypothesis-driven research focused on themolecular basis of disease with clinical transllation potential.
