Email FAQ

IUSM / IU email environment

As an IUSM student, what are my email options?

Beginning with the class of 2012, Exchange email without forwarding is required. If you are a member of the class of 2009, 2010, or 2011, you are not required to make any changes. You may use Webmail or Exchange. In addition, University Information Technology Services (UITS) will offer “Imail” and “Umail” to all IU students. (They are currently an option for incoming and graduating students, but in the fall will be available to all students. IUSM students will be able to create these accounts in addition their official Exchange email accounts.)

WARNING: Email sent from one Exchange account to another within the IU system will not be forwarded elsewhere, no matter how your forwarding options are set. Your class listserv email will remain on Exchange. It will not be forwarded. If you have Exchange email, you must be sure to check it.

Are there any disadvantages to having multiple email accounts? Advantages?

For disadvantages to multiple accounts, see the warning above.

Is it ok to forward my Exchange email to another host, such as Gmail or Hotmail?

No. Using Exchange is mandated because of its enhanced security. Also, if you have Exchange but don’t read it, you will miss official emails from IUSM. Email sent from one Exchange account to another within the IU system will not be forwarded elsewhere, no matter how your forwarding options are set.

Why am I required to use Exchange email instead of Umail, Imail, or webmail?

Using Exchange is mandated because its enhanced security helps to safeguard patient privacy.

Class-Specific

As a new student, how can I set up my Exchange email?

Follow the instructions at http://msa.iusm.iu.edu/newstudents.asp#createUserID.

I will be graduating soon. Can I keep my IU email address? How long will my Webmail or Exchange account remain active?

Yes, you can keep your email address. See http://msa.iusm.iu.edu/technology/documents/KeepIUemailAfterGraduation.pdf for details.

Your account will be disabled after the second consecutive registration period during which you do not register for classes, around February or March.

Migration from Webmail to Exchange

On occasion, my Webmail inbox has gotten full, preventing me from accessing my email. Will I run into the same problem with Exchange?

Exchange users are allotted 500 M of storage. Webmail users are allotted only 100 M. It is much more difficult to overflow your inbox with Exchange.

I have webmail, but would like to have an Exchange account. Can I get Exchange?

Yes, you are entitled to an Exchange email account.

How can I create an Exchange account?

If you are a currently enrolled student, follow these instruction:

Go to http://itaccounts.iu.edu/ -> Create more accounts -> select Exchange
And then Manage your e-mail -> (Be sure your primary email is set to youruserID@iupui.edu) Set delivery for this address to user's UITS mail account on: [SELECT EXCHANGE]. Be sure to read your Exchange email, rather than forwarding it to another email host.

(If you are a newly admitted student, follow the instructions at http://msa.iusm.iu.edu/newstudents.asp#createUserID).

I have both Webmail and Exchange. How can I migrate my email content from webmail to Exchange?

First, consider whether you really need to migrate. You can begin to use Exchange without migrating your old Webmail content. Just leave it where it is and refer to it by logging onto Webmail.

If you want to migrate your old email content, have a look at the migration from Webmail page.
