Student Mentoring in Action
Welcome to the Indiana University School of Medicine Mentor Program home page. We hope that this site will answer all of your questions regarding this program. If you are an IUSOM alumnist, we invite you to join the Mentor Program by becoming a participant at mentor meetings or a long-distance mentor to one of our current students. For more information on how alumni can become involved, please visit http://alumni.iupui.edu/medicine/ .
How the Mentor Program was established:
During academic year 2001-02, a task force of students, residents, and faculty, was established to adopt a mentoring plan for IUSOM medical students. After careful review of the literature, the task force recommended adoption of a "vertical advising" program. This concept takes advantage of the wealth of knowledge that all levels can contribute to building a more cohesive professional and educational environment. A major benefit of this model is that it breaks down the very large size of our medical school into smaller, cohesive groups. These mentoring pods create opportunities for professional socialization by improving channels of communication between faculty, students, and administration.
