Description:  

Operating Room experience in all types of anesthesia will be provided in this elective. The practical training and experience will be complemented by lectures and departmental conferences. Detailed information about this elective is available at the departmental chairman's office. Assignment to specific teaching hospitals will be arranged by the course director following the senior elective matching program. Riley Hospital can be utilized if necessary.

Description:

Introduce the student to techniques for providing postoperative pain management with special emphasis on techniques utilizing neuraxial drug administration. In addition to daily rounds on postoperative pain patients on the Anesthesia Pain Management Service the student will participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients seen in the Chronic Pain Clinic.

93SG840 SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE-IU

Description: (This course is cross-listed under Surgery)

The Surgical Intensive Care Unity (SICU) at University Hospital provides the setting for a student's participation in patient care. The fourth year student is expected to participate in the comprehensive evaluation and management of the critically ill/injured patient. He/she will have independent responsibilities including team communication, patient presentation, perform invasive procedures (under supervision) and research disease related topics. These include: 1) performing and documenting a daily comprehensive history and physical examination pertaining to the cope of critical care medicine, 2) performing vascular access procedures, 3) interpreting data related to invasive monitoring, respirator management and laboratory values and 4) intelligently discuss critical care issues in a systematic format. He/she will be the principle/first responder to a critically ill/injured patient while in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

Objectives:

During the course of the rotation the student will:

  • Develop a systematic and thorough approach to ICU patient evaluation and management.
  • Develop an understanding of the indications, technical aspects, and complications for vascular access procedures and airway control.
  • Interpret invasive monitoring data as pertains to patient management.
  • Develop an understanding of respirator management for the adult patient.

49AN712 CLINICAL ANESTHESIA

Description:

Actual "hands on" experience in the private practice of Anesthesia. Special emphasis will be given to endotracheal intubation, ventilation and routine conduct of an anesthetic. Experience with arterial line, central line and spinal anesthetic placement will be provided. Experience and exposure may be customized to particular student's desires. Extremely flexible rotation, allowing student to direct his/her own learning experience, and will be unstructured, dependent upon students initiative.

Goals:

Learn the basics of airway management including mask ventilator, LMA use and endotracheal intubation. Student should also gain experience with central line placement including Swan Ganz catheters as well as arterial line placement. Experience will also include spinal anesthesia placement. Knowledge will be gained on anesthetic drugs and their uses and contraindication.

NOTE: THIS COURSE MAY BE DROPPED OR ADDED WITHIN ONE DAY OF THE START OF THE ELECTIVE MONTH.

49AN706 ANESTHESIA AND CRITICAL CARE

Description:

This elective will consist of working in the operating room with an anesthesiologist on a one to one basis. The student will learn the pertinent use of drugs, anesthesia agents and intubation techniques in the context of surgical patient care. During the time spent, the student should expect to gather a greater understanding of private practice anesthesiology. Opportunities are available for the student to observe/participate in obstetric, pediatric, and ambulatory anesthesiology. This is a good course for all students as anesthesiology is truly a practice of medicine within a surgically relevant environment.

For those interested in pain management, there is a separate course offered with Dr. Angermeier.

02AN711 CLINICAL ANESTHESIOLOGY

Description:

NOTE: THIS COURSE MAY BE DROPPED WITHIN ONE WEEK OF THE BEGINNING OF THE ELECTIVE MONTH.  THIS COURSE MAY BE ADDED ANY TIME UNTIL START OF ELECTIVE UPON COMMUNICATION WITH DR. POND.

(1) Mastery of skills and knowledge to effectively manage emergency resuscitation.
(2) Completion of core curriculum (provided).
(3) Utilization of techniques including pulmonary artery catheterization, fiberoptic endotracheal intubation, arterial catheterization, endobronchial intubation, nasotracheal intubation, etc.
(4) Familiarization, as student desires, with special situations such as neonatal surgery, obstetrical anesthesia, trauma surgery, heart transplantation, mechanical ventricular assist device (e.g. Heart Mate), and numerous nerve blocks.
(5) One-on-one discussions with preceptors on ethics and morality of medicine including end-of-life care, cost/benefit analyses, Medical Review Panel, Legislation, drug addiction and medical policy.

The student will be exposed to a wide variety of pain management patients and anesthesia experiences. By the end of the month, the student will be able to:
1) describe the patho-physiology of acute and chronic pain;
2) manage acute pain;
3) formulate a treatment plan for chronic pain;
4) participate in the management of surgical anesthesia; and
5) do pre- and post- surgical assessments.

The student will be exposed to: 1) surgical anesthesia; 2) outpatient pain management patients; and 3) post-surgical pain management patients.

Clinical management of anesthesia. Selection and administration of various types of anesthetic drugs. Management of airway. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation - methods, techniques, role of drugs. Assignment to Recovery Room and Operating Room.
