Description:

Continued studies in management of patients with gynecologic cancer. Active participation with attending and resident staff in the management of patients in the ward and in the operating suite, as well as the out-patient setting. The extern will perform the duties of acting intern. Weekly conferences include pathology, new patient, and radiation oncology. An oral presentation will be required. Opportunities are available in related clinical and basic research subjects.

Objectives:

Our elective seeks to prepare the 4th year student to:

• Be prepared to take complete histories and physicals, present patients, and organize an assessment and plan such that they may function efficiently as OB/Gyn residents in the future.
• Participate as an assistant in oncology surgery which gives them a chance to improve their understanding of anatomy which should optimize their performance as future OB/Gyn residents.
• Refine the student's ability to research clinically oriented topics, prepare and presentation and practice their public speaking skills.

Description:

The objectives of this course are to teach the student the application of diagnostic ultrasound to the high risk obstetric patient. He/she will learn the basic principles of ultrasound, as well as actual scanning techniques. Indirectly he/she will learn basic obstetrics and management decisions. One-on-one teaching with a senior staff obstetrician is offered on a frequent basis.

Description:

The elective is designed to familiarize the student with the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive endocrine problems such as primary and secondary amenorrhea, oligo and anovulation, other causes of infertility, galactorrhea, and hirsutism. Experience will be gained in the medical and surgical management of these problems. Responsibilities will include attendance at  Reproductive Endocrinology Clinic sessions at University Hospital Coleman Center for Women, attendance at surgery at University Hospital,Wishard Memorial Hospital and the Beltway North Surgery Center, participation in the inpatient care at the extern level of all patients on the Reproductive Endocrinology Service,and attendance at weekly OB/GYN departmental Conferences. There will be weekly in-depth discussions of various clinical problems in Reproductive Endocrinology preceded by appropriate reading assignments. Optional limited clinical research projects may be undertaken if chosen by the student.

Description:

The course will focus on the continued studies in the management of high risk obstetrics. Active participation with the attending staff and residents involved in the management of the high-risk patient in the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period in the in-patient and out-patient setting. The extern will perform duties as an acting intern. Opportunities available for participation in clinical research. In house call is required at least 4 times in a month's period. A formal presentation of at least 30 minutes on a topic of choice is required.

Description:

This elective gives students a broader understanding and perspective on the changing focus of obstetricians and gynecologists. Emphasis is placed on the basic principles and management involved in the care of ambulatory patients seen by general ob/gyns. This is accomplished with a flexible schedule, allowing the student to tailor this elective to his/her own needs and interests. Students are asked to participate in the faculty clinics, both at IUMC, and at outlying sites. In addition, they are a part of both the ambulatory and inpatient surgical procedures which the faculty performs during this time period. The students participate in the colposcopy and urodynamics of patients that are seen and students will have the option of following the faculty's patients in labor and delivery. The students will also have the opportunity to attend all of the departmental lectures and grand rounds during the month.

In addition, a final paper is to be written about a current controversial topic in the field. Completion of the course fulfills the requirement for a Level II of the Lifelong Learning, competency while completion of the paper fulfills the Level III competency.

Goals:

To give a broader understanding and perspective on the changing focus of obstetricians and gynecologists especially as it relates on the basic principles and management involved in the ambulatory setting. Students may tailor this elective to their own needs and interests. By having the opportunity to attend all of the departmental lectures and grand rounds during the month, they see how a practicing university based OB/Gyn functions.

Description:

The goals of this outpatient elective is for the student to learn the principles of ambulatory care of gynecologic patients and gynecologic surgical procedures. The student will learn diagnosis and management of acute gyn emergencies. The student will gain knowledge base in gynecology.

The goals of Gynecology Clinical Clerkship will be achieved by working in the OB/GYN Care Center with residents and faculty, assisting in Gynecologic surgery, accompanying the Gyn Chief in caring for gyn emergency situations, and attending didactic OB/GYN Conferences.

The student will take call approximately three nights per month.

Description:

The student will spend time on both an obstetrics and a gynecology service.  The time spent on obstetrics will allow for experience in prenatal care, management of normal and complicated pregnancies, antepartum care, and postpartum care.  The gynecology experience consists of preoperative evaluation, participation in a wide variety of surgical cases, and postoperative care.  The services are very active, as are the subspecialties of oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, and endocrine/infertility.  The hospital clinics will be utilized for teaching in the ambulatory setting.  There will be weekly didactic educational conferences from 7:00 AM – 11:30 AM every Wednesday, as well as daily morning reports. 

The schedule for this rotation is quite flexible.  The student has the option of dividing up the month between general obstetrics, high-risk obstetrics, or gynecologic oncology according to his/her educational goals.  Students are expected to take four calls during the month.

Goals:

This elective will provide the student experience in prenatal care and observation in the office in both Obstetrics and Gynecology. He or she will assist in management of patients in labor and assist at delivery. Instruction and observation of common gynecologic problems will be a part of this elective and also assisting at gynecologic surgery.

Due to the large number of requests for this rotation and a limited number of available faculty, there will be an occasional month when this rotation will not be available or will be canceled.

Description:

Students will have experience in OB including work in the Outpatient Clinic, observation of labor and active participation in delivery, both normal and complicated, in association with residents and staff. Experience and active participation in surgery is included in a one on one situation. Students will participate in office, outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and treatment. Hospital clinics, which include obstetrics and gynecology are utilized in teaching. The Ob/Gyn department has weekly conferences for continued post graduate medical education, which will be interesting for medical students. Also there are weekly housestaff teaching conferences by the OB/GYN department in which the student will participate. Additional information may be obtained from the Hospital Medical Education Director or the Obstetrical Medical Education Director.

Description:

This course is designed to introduce senior medical students to clinical gynecology and obstetrics as practiced in a community hospital. Day to day clinical aspects of the practice will be emphasized. Hands on training is encouraged. Students average 5 - 10 deliveries per month. On-call schedule is student's option. Large volume practice allows students to improve GYN evaluation techniques. One on one contact with all physicians in single office. Housing and meals provided at hospital for students.

Goals:

Acquaint student physicians with experience away from the medical center setting, exposing them to practice in a smaller community while helping them better their clinical skills through one on one contact with board certified physicians with years of experience. Large volume practice provides ample patient contact for the students.

Description:

The medical student will be exposed to a wide variety of outpatient and inpatient obstetrical and gynecologic patients. Obstetric and gynecologic histories and examinations are to be performed and mastered. The student will be exposed to obstetrical and gynecologic procedures with active participation where appropriate. The student is expected to devote a portion of his/her time in reading and review of obstetrical dating, routine prenatal care, antenatal surveillance, and the conduct and management of normal labor.

Description:

In obstetrics, three mornings per week will be spent in Prenatal Clinic and on rounds. Assigned to one of the clinic physicians, the student will develop an understanding of the comprehensive examination of the pelvis. With a high clinic population, students will have opportunities to observe and monitor patients in labor and numerous deliveries. It is expected that the student will have outstanding opportunities to observe prenatal care, normal deliveries, Cesarean sections, and postpartum care. Additional experiences will include: (1) labor induction; (2) fetal monitoring; (3) newborn evaluation; (4) interpretation of pelvic radiologic and ultrasound studies. In gynecology, the student will observe minor operative procedures including D&C's, biopsies, and conizations, as well as major gynecologic surgeries. Students will be encouraged to examine pathologic surgical specimens with the pathologists and attending physician. Students will develop an understanding of performance of common gynecological procedures including pap smears. Family planning concepts are included in this segment.

Description:

Four week experience with emphasis on operative gynecology and complicated obstetrics. The clinical experience will be selective and balanced with daily noon hour discussions and daily rounds in the hospital. Office experience will be limited to selected cases illustrating common clinical problems (office gynecology, infertility, contraception counseling). Emphasis during this elective will not be on multiple pelvic exams or obstetric deliveries. An interview prior to elective is encouraged.
